I bought the 4S2P battery pack from Biddipole and am very happy with it. I found a much better alternative is battery packs made from A123 cells which allow 100w operation and they are very small and light. I'm also sorry that I bought the internal batteries for my FT-897, they are expensive and only allow 20w operation.

I prefer the Icom 706MKIIG for mobile use since the audio DSP noise reduction works better for me and the transmit audio is better on the Icom.įor portable battery ops you don't want an Icom 706MKIIG or 7000 since they draw almost 2A on receive compared to about 600ma for the Yaesu FT-857. I have both and had I bought the 857 first I would not have an 897 sitting around for the last 5yrs with no use.īoth a good radios, not great but good. The Yaesu FT-857 mobile is the identical radio inside as the FT-897 but its much smaller and lighter. Those issues aside, most folks in the group seem to like their radios and recommend them when a potential buyer asks.

There are mods out there for adding external fans. Also regularly mentioned are concerns about the radios running hot. General consensus is that you need to pay careful attention to station grounding and power down the radio when making/breaking connections. There is also a currently-running thread about zapping the radio when connecting to or disconnecting from the CI-V port. There are many suggestions from users to verify the integrity of the power supply, wiring, connectors, and fuses (reportedly, the stock Icom in-line fuse holders get loose and make poor contact).
As mentioned above the 7000 is reportedly very sensitive to low voltage conditions. I have been at Field Days where the only radios at the site were of the Icom IC-706 or Yaesu FT-857/897 class and found the filtering to be lacking.įrom reading the messages in the IC-7000 Yahoo group, the most common recurring issue is power supply problems. I think, in general, no compact radio is going to have sufficient filtering or DSP horsepower to match a full-tilt-boogie contest/DX rig.
